Season Update - August 2025

Planting – Just Around the Corner
It’s that time again – the paddocks are prepped, the seed is sorted, and we’re about to kick off planting for the new season. In the next few weeks, the first shallots will hit the soil. It’s always a satisfying moment – that shift from planning to action, when the rhythm of the season really begins.

This year we’ve made a few tweaks to how we’ll space and irrigate the early blocks, aiming for even better sizing and quality. There’s still a chill in the air, but the soil’s waking up, and so are we; the countdown’s on!

Around the Farm – New Life and Full Dams
The best thing about winter on the farm? New lambs. There’s nothing quite like walking out in the morning to find another few wobbly little legs in the paddock. They’re a cheerful sight, bouncing between the older ewes and sunbaking when they can find a warm patch. Even in the busiest times, it’s a reminder of why we do this – to be part of something growing.

But the biggest news by far: the creek is finally running! After waiting almost all winter, we’ve had enough rain to get the water moving again – and one of our main dams is officially full. If you know farming, you know how good that feels. Water gives us breathing space. It means we can plant with confidence and irrigate when we need to, not just when we have to. It’s a game-changer.

Looking Ahead – Gearing Up for Growth
We’ve spent the last few months getting everything ready – machines serviced, trays cleaned, plans made. The early red and gold shallots will go in first, followed by our banana variety (long shallot) a week or two later. It’s a careful balance, matching the soil conditions with the right window for growth. But with full dams and solid prep, we’re in a good spot.

As always, we’re focused on quality – getting the sizing right, the skins clean, and the product consistent across every box. Our goal is to make life easier for the people who use our shallots, whether that’s a wholesaler, a chef, or someone stacking pallets in a warehouse at 4am.

Thanks for Being Part of the Journey
No matter how many years we’ve been at this, each season still brings fresh energy. There’s excitement in the air as we gear up again, and we just wanted to say thanks – for following along, for choosing Menlo Fields, and for backing local growers.

From the full dam to the first seedling, it’s all starting to come together – and we’re looking forward to sharing the season ahead with you.
