Eschallions

Known as eschallions, banana shallots, or long shallots, this variety offers the best of both worlds: the size and ease of an onion, with the flavour and finesse of a true shallot. With their elongated, tapered shape and light rose-golden skin, eschallion shallots are a favourite in commercial kitchens for their consistency, versatility, and clean flavour.

At Menlo Fields, we grow premium Tasmanian eschallion shallots, bred for uniformity and flavour in the cool-climate conditions of North East Tasmania. These long shallots are ideal for chefs and high-volume prep environments — easy to peel, slice, and portion, with minimal waste and reliable flavour every time.

The taste is mild, sweet, and refined — similar to golden shallots but more delicate than red. They perform beautifully whether raw, roasted, braised or caramelised, making them perfect for sauces, dressings, soups and garnishes where consistency is key.

We grade and pack our eschallions by size, and typically supply them in 5kg wholesale cartons, with alternate packaging available to suit retail or foodservice needs. Their long shelf life and uniform shape also make them a standout option for produce displays or premium supply programs.
